What Is A Business Plan

If you have ever scribbled down a business idea or a scrap piece of paper or a napkin, then you have written a basic business plan already. In your formal business plan, you will need to include a few more details. Some being, a summary of your product/service, a marketing plan and a financial plan. Your plan doesn’t have to be long, one or two pages of bullet points are sufficient enough but for a more in-depth, plan aim for 5 to 10 pages.

Know Who Your Competitors Are

It is always good to find competitors in your area that sell similar products to you. You may think your idea is unique, but a quick google search will show you if it is truly a one of a kind idea or whether you now have to compete with other brands to make yours the best. Although there might be many brands that sell the same product or service as you, find a couple who are most like for like and write a plan as to what you can improve on and do better.

Identifying Your Audience

In any business, you need to know your target audience, for example, if you are selling kitchen appliances you want your target audience to be homeowners and renters, as they are more likely to buy your product. If you were to advertise your kitchen appliances to school children under the age of 18, I very much doubt you will have any sales. If it is not apparent who your target audience should be, put out some questionnaires to different demographics and see which ones suit your product the most. Make sure you state in your plan who your target audience are and if you want to expand to another audience in the future.

Cash Forecasting

When running a successful business, you need to keep an eye on your finances. Cash forecasting is vital to include in your plan, it will help estimate the amount of income and outgoings within the business. You typically should have your cash forecast cover 12 months, check your cash forecasting plan weekly or monthly to check you are staying on track.
