While many of these are unavoidable, you could be paying over the odds without needing to. In today’s climate, you will want to save as much as you can, as business can be unpredictable. Here are some of the top ways you could save money in your business.

  1. Hire freelancers 

Freelancers are a great way to help save your business money. If you have a certain department in your business that you find they don’t often have much to do, it could be worth turning to freelancers instead. Designers or copywriters are good examples of this. While you would pay an employee over £20,000 per year in a full-time position, you only have to pay a freelancer for the project. You will know a set cost right from the off, which is better to budget for and won’t have to front costs such as national insurance, sick pay, or holiday pay – all of which can save your company money.

  1. Check your internet and phone providers

With so many phone and internet providers out there, you could be paying more than you want for the same service as someone cheaper. Don’t be afraid to shop around and see where you can find the best deals. Take a look at your data and think of the plan you need and will use. It could be you pay for a high amount of storage or bandwidth but don’t even use half of this. Take this into account and downgrade your plan to something cheaper if you don’t need the extra benefits others give. Also, take a look at digital programs that can streamline business processes and negate the need for certain staff member’s jobs. Whether you are looking for a provider to streamline your audit process or an accounts software, these can all make jobs a lot easier.

  1. Ask suppliers for loyalty discounts

This is a great tip if you have been loyal to suppliers for a long time. They would much rather keep you than have you switch to someone else. Ask them if they will offer you a loyalty discount for being with them for so long, or see if they have any referral offers. You could refer other businesses you know to use them and receive a financial reward for doing so. 

  1. Look at your marketing strategies 

While marketing undoubtedly brings business to you, it is important to only spend your budget in the areas that work. Have a look at where your marketing budget is going and which areas are bringing in the most return of investment. If you are spending lots on advertising but receiving most of your new customers from social media or organic Google search, you are wasting your money.

  1. Don’t take on unnecessary debt

This is particularly true if you are just starting out your business. Make sure you do not take on any unnecessary debt and only purchase what you can afford. Do a cost-benefit analysis and think of where you will be spending in the future and how debt will impact your cash flow. Having too much debt can be detrimental to expansion plans and will leave you with less profit each month.
