A Business Plan

Any business venture must be well thought out. Before spending any money, you need to put pen to paper and work out the intricacies and determine if the plan is actually viable.  Writing a business plan will focus your mind. Your idea will transform out of the realm of thought and idealism and become something tangible and real. This is very important as to how you think things are going to work generally end up not being the case at all. However, the business plan will shatter any illusions and force you to look at the cold, dry facts. It is an essential step for any budding business owner to go through and save you from making many costly mistakes.

Funding

Most new business ventures take an initial investment in which to start. So, you need to secure these funds before you can start. Have a word with friends and family to begin with, then think about things like crowd funding or securing a business loan from the bank. In order to to the bank, you need to have your business plan with you to show how competent you are.

Seek Advice

Think about the type of business you are thinking of. Perhaps you are opening a retail franchise. Well it makes sense to speak to other shop owners and discuss with them the practicalities of opening a new shop. You could also attend certain networking conventions and discuss with different people there such as accountants, lawyers etc., the more information you can get, the better.

Research the Market

If you want to hit the ground running, you need to do a lot of background research. First of all, have a proper look at the competitions. How do they position themselves? What is their branding like? What about core values and ethos? How do they market their products and services? What is their focus – the problem they are solving, the ethical issues that they are adhering to, etc.? Think about your USP (unique selling point) in reference to this. Take a look at the websites and social media accounts. You could get involved in conversations that are on particular product ranges. Social media is a great tool to help you get to know your potential customer base. The more information you can get on how your customer thinks, the better your initial breakout will be. You can target your marketing material directly to them. Market research is a vital aspect to the overall success of your business.
