With Christmas just around the corner (at the time of writing), now is the time to consider your work schedule. Should you take time off during the holiday season? Or should you continue working? If the need to make more money is constantly on your mind, you might decide on the latter. But is this a good idea? Maybe not, as there are reasons why taking time away from your business is important, especially at Christmas time. If you have done your corporate parties and everyone has their annual custom hoodies adorned with your logo and the best Christmas baubles, then you need to slow down. It’s okay to keep your business on a skeleton staff at Christmas time!

#1: Time off during Christmas is good for your health

Christmas is a very busy season for most of us. Outside of work, there are all kinds of things we need to do, from buying presents for loved ones to preparing our homes for out-of-town guests. Getting ourselves ready for Christmas can be stressful, which is why it’s a good idea to remove yourself from the stresses of work. If you overload yourself with things to do both inside and outside of the office, you could burn yourself out and fall ill.

Of course, after a busy year, it might be that you are tired and close to burnout already. At this point in the calendar, it might be that a time for rest is sorely needed. While Christmas can be hectic it can also be a time to relax with our families, so give yourself this time to unwind and de-stress.

#2: Your family need you

As is the case with many business owners, it might be that you spend a lot of time away from home due to your work. And even when at home, you might be tempted to tuck yourself away to work overtime. For your family, this could be hard to take, especially if they rarely get to spend time with you. So, for their sake as well as your own, unplug from work this Christmas so you can spend more time with them.

Your presence could be the greatest gift to them all, above and beyond the presents they receive. And when you all spend time together in your family Christmas shirts, happy memories will be created for the people you love and care for. These are also the memories that you will value, as they will be worth far more to you than yet another Christmas memory of you working within your office!

#3: You will have more time to think about the year ahead

The end of each year is a good time to reflect on all that has gone before and all that is to come. So, as the Christmas festivities draw to a close, you could spend a day pondering on these things before you go back to work. Take time to think of your life goals as well as your business goals, and reflect on what you want to achieve in the year ahead. Make a list of resolutions that apply to both your business and your life and keep them in mind when the year begins in earnest.

These are just 3 of the reasons why you should unplug from your business this Christmas. So, keep them in mind and remember the importance of these for your employees as well. After all, even Ebenezer Scrooge gave his employee a little bit of time off, however begrudgingly!
