When you are a business owner, you’ll want to do a lot of the work yourself. This is certainly true when you just get started, and even as you grow, you might be reluctant to partner with anyone or even employ people because you don’t want to lose control. 

However, it’s important to know that your business can only grow so much when it’s just you working in it. At some point, you’ll need to decide whether you want more success or more control. If it’s the former, you’ll want to make some good business deals to ensure you gain a lot and lose very little (if anything at all). Do Your Preparation 

One thing that is crucial if you want to make a positive business deal is that you’ll have to do a lot of preparation. If you go into a meeting with a potential partner, investor, supplier, or even client, and you haven’t prepared, you may find that the deal doesn’t go your way or perhaps doesn’t even happen at all. 

Preparation means ensuring that you have all the information to hand to be able to answer questions and put forward arguments and ideas. It also means researching the person you are hoping to make a deal with – or their business – and working out a strategy based on what you know about them. This will be different for each deal you want to make, which is why having a boilerplate technique and script is not going to work. 

Negotiate Win-Win Results 

You might go into a business deal with the idea that you want to get as much as possible out of it, and you don’t care about how that leaves the other person. After all, you need to think of your business over anything else. 

While this is true – you do need to put your business first – you shouldn’t try to ‘beat’ someone else to get a good deal. This will actually put them on the defensive and might mean they don’t want to make a deal with you at all if the terms don’t seem fair. This could also give you a bad reputation. Communicate Well 

You can prepare well and have plenty of resources at your disposal, but if you’re unable to put your ideas across in a coherent way, the person you want to make a deal with may not understand what you want and decline to work with you. Or they might misunderstand and offer something that isn’t going to work – this is even worse if you also misunderstand them and accept the offer. 
This is why it’s important to communicate well. Think about how best to put your point across, and have some visual aids to help you drive the ideas home. Ask questions and answer any question put to you as clearly as you can.
