Starting a business is a labor of love. When you have an entrepreneurial spirit and a drive to succeed, you have the beginnings of something you can work for. But creating something out of nothing takes effort and tenacity. Keep reading for guidance that will help you along the way.

Having the greatest product since sliced bread is exciting. In today’s flashy and need-to-get-noticed culture, your product must stand above the rest to become visible to potential consumers. You need to create a look that attracts people visually.
Take, for example, the humble candle. Sure, it might be crafted with the most amazing materials and smell like heaven itself, but if it does not hold a customer’s eye, they will likely move on to the next thing instead of making a purchase. This is where something as simple as a sticker label can make or break the deal. Choose from a variety of finishes, such as a leather look or luxurious gold. Next, select a font that evokes the mood of the scent or reflects your company’s overall design scheme.
In continuing with the candle example, once you have the label set, it is time to think about the vessel. Do you want glass with a hefty weighted base, simple clear glass, smoky glass with colorful hues that blend into an ombre, or maybe metal? Any of these options may include a cap or cover. Since many people who purchase candles tend to keep the containers long after the candles have melted down, you want something beautiful they will be happy to display and include your company’s name to remind them where to purchase their next one. Continue brand marketing by making something attractive and useful.
Join Local Organizations
If you have entities in your local area that come together to support one another as small business owners, you need to engage. Look for your local Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Administration offices. Many of these organizations offer insight and guidance on what it takes to start and run a small business. They often hold classes on how to secure loans or other funding and how to write a foundational business plan.
In addition, these organizations provide collaborative events that are opportunities to meet with like-minded individuals near you. Look on their respective calendars for events such as mixers and networking or after-hours business get-togethers. Bring your business cards and get ready to meet new people traveling on the same business path as you. There may be seasoned small business veterans or serial entrepreneurs present. These business owners could be a future contact or someone who may want to carry your goods in their store.
Even if you do not make any solid business arrangements at these mixers, they are a great way to meet new people and create connections. You may find a mentor who can offer you a more personalized approach to doing business or a sounding board on small business best practices.
Deliver Great Customer Service
Great customer service is essential for a business’s survival, especially a small one that relies on continued customer patronage. If you question that, consider the last time you received subpar customer service. Now ask yourself if you ever purchased that business again. The answer is probably no.
How someone feels after interacting with a business informs their opinion and perception of the company and its products as a whole. When people leave an interaction, whether online as a chat or email, in the sphere of social media, or in person, they want to feel heard and respected. To that end, your words in print and in person matter more than you think. So do your actions.
If you are busy behind the counter and swamped with multiple tasks, do not ignore the person who just walked through the door. Take a breath, smile, and acknowledge them with a kind greeting, tell them that you will be with them as soon as you can, and then follow through with that statement. The person can see you are busy but will feel good about the interaction when you meet their needs with kindness. That is how you build your reputation and repeat customers.
