How To Cope With Limited Staff

It can often seem as though staff are a dime a dozen. This is a horrible manner of referring to and thinking about people, of course, but it’s true that many jobs are quite competitive, and replacing people if needed is a possibility. This goes double in the times of Covid-19, where many are suffering from losing their jobs or seeing their life’s work not pan out as expected.

But it’s not always the case that you could hire and onboard a new staff member in a couple of days, or even weeks. Some jobs are specialized. Some require specific licenses for an employee to pass the legal code necessary for their hiring. Maybe you’re just struggling to hire people that you like, and that you trust to be part of your firm. We can never completely rest on even the most reliable considerations, in the same way we can never expect our suppliers to be fully stocked, 100% of the time.

So – how can you cope with limited staff? Where do you get started?

Outsource

Outsourcing can do your firm a world of good, particularly if you have particular requirements that need servicing, or if you have no one dedicated in-house for this task. For instance, it’s unlikely that every firm will stock its own creative and marketing department, and even if they do, they’ll still likely go to a third party to generate advertising material, or branding. For small businesses, outsourcing similar-sized graphics firms for logos and texture work can be a fantastic idea. Outsourcing can help you plug the holes in your skill ‘blind-spots,’ but without having to settle for anything less than the best.

Use Specialized Hiring Services

Using specialized hiring services for your potential need can be important, particularly if you need a niche role staffed. For instance, it can be hard to find a CDL truck driver for hire at a moment’s notice, but with services such as the resource linked, you can find more comprehensive staffing solutions that have been pre-vetted and are fully qualified for work in that particular role. This can be especially important for roles that are known for their staff turnover, for reasons that are quite easy to understand.

Work With Schemes

Certain schemes can help you find staff in certain trades, and through these measures, you can perform a significant amount of good. Outreach programs for prisoners returning to society are truly needed, for example, and if your kitchen needs trainee chefs this can be a great place to start. Graduate schemes can help you mold young minds straight out of university, which has the added benefit of not having to train a staff member to ‘unlearn’ their habits brought over from a previous job. Schemes aren’t there to take everything from you, they can really be a sound business decision if you understand what requirements you’re looking for.

With this advice, we hope you can more easily cope with limited staff, day and night.
