Launching A New Business: Getting Your Idea Off The Ground

Ok, so you have got a superb business idea, but you have no idea how to get it off the ground and turn it from a concept into reality. Perhaps the idea has been floating around the back of your mind for a while, and you have shared your thoughts with family and friends, who have supported it and given you the push to really start looking at how to get it moving. Here, we are going to look at some of the things that you need to do to get it off the ground.

You can’t set up a successful business without doing the legwork and the research first. Get yourself a blank notebook and write down everything – all of your ideas, all of the directions in which you could go. Having plenty of options open to you at the beginning will help you to keep your mind open to the possibilities as they begin to emerge later on.

See who else is doing what you want to do. Find out if your idea has local interest, and who is your main competitor. If there is no competitor, why is that? Is that because there is no demand for your idea? If there is competition, how are they doing things, and how will you be different?

Social media can be an excellent place to start your research – you can find relevant groups and ask them questions and set up online focus groups to sound out your ideas to. Assess the demand for your idea before you go any further.

Create a business plan

Once you have your idea in mind, it is important to have a thorough business plan. This is a working document to take to potential investors, the bank, or even partners to gain support. It needs to be done professionally and properly to show that your business is serious, and you have thought about everything.

You need to consider every cost involved in setting up, from premises to technology to tools and equipment such as Atlas Copco Filters. Don’t let even the smallest stone lie unturned, and make sure you plan in a reasonable contingency. This means that if you go over budget, you still have the funds to keep the business going. Many businesses fail at this step because of a lack of foresight into their startup costs. 

Get advice

Make sure you are getting advice from as many different avenues as possible. Whether it is professional advice from business lawyers and accountants to the support from people in the field or even online networking groups, it will all help. Starting up a new business can be lonely, and having someone to bounce ideas off and give you the right information can be the difference between success and failure. If you can find yourself an experienced mentor, that will go a long way.

Setting up a business takes determination and hard work. You want to ensure that everything that you do is meaningful and worthwhile, so researching, planning, and getting the right advice is essential.
