It takes a lot of time, money and effort to recruit the best employees for your business, so once you have them onboard, you will want to do everything you can to keep them.

Retaining employees right now is not so easy as it once was because it is an employee’s market and more staff are quitting their jobs to pursue other companies and other avenues of earning money.

1. Support them from the start

If you want to retain employees, then it is important you start by hiring the right people. This means, from day one, letting them know what your company is about, and training them to do their job as effectively as possible.

If they know what is expected of them and they are given the support they need to succeed, they are much less likely to seek other opportunities elsewhere.

2. Reward them

Employee rewards build loyalty. If you want to retain as many of your employees as possible, then you need to show them that you appreciate the hard work they do for you, and employee rewards from monetary bonuses to free meditation classes to help them de-stress are a good way to do that. 

Good employee reward schemes will also help to bolster your business by boosting employee wellbeing, so your staff will take fear sick days and feel healthier, happier and more willing to work for you too.

3. Pay them well

This is a really obvious point, but no matter how good your company is or how well you treat your employees, if they are not being effectively compensated for the work they do, then chances are they will leave for a company that can offer them a higher salary eventually.

If your business is new and you cannot afford to pay the top rate, then offering stocks and shares or more flexibility in working life can often make up for the compensation issue, but you should still be looking to pay as much as you can to keep your talent where you want them to be.

4. Offer training and development

If employees feel like they are stagnating while working for your company, then chances are they will seek employment elsewhere because most people want to grow and progress in their careers.

That is why it is so important you offer opportunities for them to learn new skills and obtain promotions with your company if you want to keep them with you.

5. Offer a better work-life balance

Most people do not want to work 12 hours a day and never see their kids, so by offering flexible and remote working options, you are able to much more effectively retain staff right now.

As you can see, there are lots of fairly simple things you can do to retain more of your employees right now, so be sure to put them into action if you are serious about holding on to your staff.
