Tips For Looking After Your Employees In The Workplace

When you run a business, it’s imperative you take as good care of your employees as possible. They are the backbone of your business and without them, your company wouldn’t be able to function, succeed and grow. There are many things you can do to take care of the health and well-being of your employees both mentally and physically and the sooner you implement changes to your company, the sooner you can reap the benefits. Allow the option of hybrid working

Hybrid working is often cited as a leading factor for improving the health and well-being of your employees. This is when you allow your employees to work both from home and from the office and can give people the benefits of being able to flexibly work the way they do so best. Working from home means people can spend time with their family members such as their children, but having some days in the office means that you can still easily check in with them and teamwork and collaboration are easier. It also gives the choice for those that might prefer one or another to work the way they do best.

Ensure they have the correct equipment

When at work, it’s likely you will need certain equipment to get jobs done, depending on what industry you are in. If you are in the business of handling heavy-duty equipment, for example, a portable gantry crane is vital and can stop employees from hurting themselves. It can also get the job at hand done much more quickly and efficiently. If your employees are working from computers all day, having the correct desk chairs and screen protectors can keep their joints and eyes protected from RSI. Speak to your employees and get feedback on if there is anything they can think of that might make their job that little bit easier. 

Check in on their well being regularly

Mental wellbeing is vital for being productive and happy at work, yet if you don’t check in with people you might assume they are fine. This is why it’s so important to regularly ask how they are and find out if they need any additional support. Be sure to have private one to one’s with those that work for you and discuss things such as how they are coping with their workload, if they need any additional help and if there are any concerns or queries they might have that could help their work situation. 

Provide regular training

Best practices change all the time and as such, it’s important you provide regular training to your employees to keep them up to date. It could be with things such as IT and technology, or more physical training if your job requires this. Businesses such as those in the building field will require regularly updated health and safety practices depending on the site and type of job they are working on for example. Regular training not only keeps everyone up to speed, but also shows that you care and are on top of keeping their health and wellbeing as optimized as possible.

Ensure the office is optimized for health and wellbeing

The work environment that you provide can also play a pivotal role in the health and well-being of those that work for you. Make sure the space is well-ventilated, with plenty of cool air in the summer and enough heat in the winter. Have enough natural light that can boost the mental well-being of those in the space – if this is a struggle, you can get lights that mimic natural daylight. You should also have adequate breakaway spaces such as a kitchen and seating area where they can go to eat their lunch, have a coffee and just get away from their desks when needed. Plants can also help to improve the circulation of oxygen and having art on the walls has been shown to boost happiness levels. These are just a few things you can do to boost the well-being of those in the workplace itself.

Encourage team building 

Team building and the bond your employees have with each other will ensure their mental health is optimized and they enjoy coming to work as opposed to being in an unfriendly environment. There are many things you can do to encourage your team members to bond with each other. You could arrange a team building day where they will partake in a host of activities to get to know and bond with each other better. You could arrange work events such as a party in the summer as well as around Christmas time and you could sort out something such as work drinks down the pub. 

Provide plenty of opportunities for growth 

People want to know they have progression at their place of work. This is beneficial for their mental health and to know they are growing within the company. Without this, they can quickly resent their work and want to move onto something else. Speak with your employees to find out what they want to do, the position they wish to progress to, and what their general goals and aspirations are. You can then help them know what they need to do to achieve this. They will appreciate your help and effort and put in more work to achieve this too.

They say that your workforce is only as good as your least happy employee, so by ensuring the well-being of them all is optimized, you can keep this at a top level.   1. Great tips! Another thing I’d like to add. Make sure that you don’t overwork your employees because this will only lead to stress and burnout. Worse… they’d resign.
