When you have been married for a while things can sometimes get stale and this is when it is really important that you put the work in. You could find that if you let things slide, communication goes and arguments get out of hand too often, you might soon find yourself asking “can I represent myself in a divorce court” and that is something that nobody wants to think about! To stop this from happening, it is important to get things back on track before they can go stale. If you are having the famous 7-year itch or just find that you are not as happy in your relationship as you once were, then there are some things that you can do to keep the spark alive in your relationship. Here are our top tips…

  1. Remember why you got married in the first place

You might have been married for a long time or just a few years, but it is important to never forget why you committed to spending your lives together. When you are in an argument or haven’t seen each other in a long time then it can be difficult to sometimes think of happier times, but you need to try. If your anniversary is coming up, why not consider doing a vow renewal? This can be a really lovely thing to plan together and you can also get to say your vows in front of others. It will get you thinking about all the things you cherish about your other half and why you love them.

  1. Communicate often

Remember the days when you used to just enjoy each other’s company? Try to get back to that. It can be too easy to fall into a trap of just talking about bills or work and going on your phone a lot when you are relaxing together. Instead, take time to just talk and catch up. If something is annoying you, communicate it nicely rather than waiting for it to boil up and come to a head in an argument.

  1. Don’t take each other for granted

After a while, you can find that you take each other for granted and this is not something that you want to do. Instead, make sure that if your other half does something nice for you, that you acknowledge and appreciate it. Do little things for them too, such as making them lunch for work for the next day, or buying them a small random gift. Even things such as putting a load of washing on or cooking dinner can mean a lot when your other half is really busy. It is these small things that can really make the biggest difference and help your relationship once you have been married for a long time.

These are just a few simple things that you can do to help keep the spark alive in your relationship. By doing so, you will find that you are in a much happier and healthier place together.
