Ensuring Wellness in the Workplace- A Guide for Employers
Maintaining wellness in the workplace is essential for both productivity and employee satisfaction. Wellness is not just referring to physical health it is also talking about mental and emotional well-being.
When you create a healthy workplace culture, it is going to improve the job satisfaction of your employees and reduce absenteeism. In general it is going to boost performance.
Take a look at how you can ensure wellness in the workplace.
Promote Physical Health
Physical wellness is often the foundation of overall well-being. As an employer you have to make sure that you encourage physical health in a number of ways.
You can give your employees ergonomic furniture or implement wellness programs. When you provide employees with things such as standing desks and adjustable chairs this is going to help prevent back and neck pain for them.
Be sure to offer regular breaks where they can go and stretch or walk to reduce the negative impact of long periods of sitting. Try implementing on site facilities where people can engage in fitness by partnering with your local gym.
Mental Health Awareness
Mental health is an integral part of overall wellness. Employees who have good mental health are more productive and creative at the same time.
They also tend to be more engaged at work. It is critical that as an employer you normalize conversations about mental health and provide resources for employees who might be struggling at any given moment. A supportive environment that reduces stress can help your employees to perform at their best. Try to give your employees flexible working hours with the option to work remotely when they can.
Finally, communication is key. Being clear in your communication about work can also help to alleviate mental health challenges in your employees.
Cleanliness and Hygiene
A clean and hygienic workplace is essential for physical health and well-being. Make sure you’re implementing routine cleaning schedules to ensure that shared spaces are sanitized so that you can reduce the spread of germs.
It is also important that you provide employees with some basic hygiene supplies such as wet wipes, and sanitizers as these can help to keep the environment clean especially in those areas that are considered high touch.
Encourage Healthy Eating
Workplace wellness also extends to nutrition. Make sure you are providing employees with access to healthy snacks, smoothies, nuts and fruits. This can help them to be energized all throughout the day.
Many companies have started offering healthier lunch options in their cafeterias or they may have set programs that are going to encourage employees to eat healthy at work or to bring balanced meals from home.
Consider putting water stations in your office or providing reusable water bottles. Hydration plays a big role in maintaining energy levels and focus in an office.
Foster Social Connections
Social well-being in the workplace is often overlooked. However, it’s going to play a significant role in how satisfied workers are on the job. Make sure you create avenues for social interaction among workers.
